Animal Law Clinic

As a premier institute for legal education, the NALSAR University of Law engages in various methods of education. Our center, under the stewardship of our faculty coordinator Mr. Vivek Mukherjee, has formulated a one-year clinic programme in Animal Protection Laws for students to develop and hone skills in current discipline requirements.

We have constant support from our partners in mentoring the students into understanding the nuances of the Movement for the Cause of Animals. Since 2019, the Clinic has had several projects being conducted under the guidance of eminent members from the animal welfare space, such as Ms. Gauri Maulekhi, Mr. Steven Wise, Ms. Alokparna Sengupta, Mr. Jayasimha Nuggehalli and Ms. Riddhi Patel.

In the academic year 2022-2023 the clinic students are working on the following projects:

  1. Preparing a country report for Global Food Partners titled “MAPPING STAKEHOLDERS: Supporting the Transition to Cage-free Egg Production Systems in India”. Supervisor: Prof. Jayasimha Nuggehalli, Founder & COO, GFP.
  2. Preparing an advocacy strategy and research paper for Fish Welfare Initiative, India. Supervisors: Karthik Pulugurtha, MD, FWI and Rhiddhi Patel, Legal Consultant, FWI.
  3. Pet shops research paper for HSI, India. Supervisor: Shreya Paropkari, Senior Campaign Manager.

At the Clinic Programme, our method of education is to guide students through the research and theories of the Movement for Animals, while inducting them in our ongoing projects. The students contribute to the work of our center by creative writing and research assistance. This approach has been helpful to the students in developing a practical understanding of social justice beyond academic knowledge.
